About Us

We’re Eight Decades Forward

Our Vision

We create spaces that matter. These are places that shape how people live, move, connect, and belong. With more than 80 years of experience, our vision is centred on outcomes, not just outputs.
.
We believe in design with purpose: architecture that responds to today’s needs while anticipating tomorrow’s possibilities. Through inclusive thinking, collaborative processes, and design that evolves with the world, we aim to build a future that is more connected, resilient, and meaningful.

Our Legacy

Founded in 1943, SVA began as a pioneering architectural practice at a time when Africa’s cities were just starting to transform. From those early years, we built our reputation not only on design excellence but also on trust, guiding clients through complexity with insight, care, and creativity.

Over the decades, our portfolio has grown to include some of the continent’s most significant projects, from retail and commercial hubs to healthcare, education, leisure, and civic landmarks. Each project reflects our belief that architecture is more than buildings: it is about shaping how people live, move, learn, heal, gather, and grow.

Today, with offices across South Africa and strong partnerships throughout the continent, SVA continues to design with intention. We honour our heritage by looking forward, creating spaces rooted in context, responsive to people, and built to endure. Eight decades on, our biggest building is still trust, and our vision remains clear: to create spaces that matter.

1943

EARLY DAYS FOR SVA

Hellmut Stauch founded the practice in Pretoria in 1943 after emigrating from Germany in 1935. From these early years, he introduced modernist principles to South African architecture and laid the foundations for a growing practice, expanding into satellite offices in Pietersburg (Polokwane) and Mmabatho.
1952

A SEASON OF AWARDS

Early recognition came with a competition win for the Windhoek Library, Archives and Museum. This success led to a new Windhoek office and innovative modular low-cost housing designs that could grow with communities.
1958

REACHING NEW DIMENSIONS

New leadership strengthened SVA in distinct ways. Robin Vorster played a key role in unifying the practice and establishing strong management principles, while Bryan Prisgrove elevated technical and professional expertise. In 1959, a Johannesburg office was opened to service two new commissions, the Netherlands Bank and the President Hotel.
1967

EXPANSION ACROSS CITIES

An amalgamation with the office of Ian Park Ross and new projects enabled a Durban office to open which later joined with ‘Piet Bakker Architects’. This became a springboard for further regional growth and broader project work.
1978

RETAIL AND REGIONAL PRESENCE

SVA was appointed to design the major Green Acres retail project. Offices in Port Elizabeth and East London soon followed, and the firm expanded its footprint while construction began on the President (now Protea) Hotel in Sea Point.
1980

A NEW DIGITAL AGE

With the arrival of CAD, SVA opened a central computer bureau in Midrand to streamline working drawings and strengthen technical capacity across the practice.
1990

JOURNEYS INTO AFRICA

The firm took its expertise beyond South Africa, delivering projects across the continent and expanding its experience into new geographies, including Mauritius.
1998

GROWTH ABOUNDS

SVA merged with Mwamuko O’Malley Moses, creating a unified Johannesburg presence for the Gauteng region and strengthening its capacity for larger, more complex commissions.
2012

STRATEGIC MOVES

A key strategic decision brought all SVA entities together under one international company, streamlining leadership and enhancing global reach.
2015

PARTNERING WITH PURPOSE

SVA entered a partnership with GIBB, becoming a majority Black-owned company with a qualified B-BBEE rating. This strengthened its business foundation and commitment to transformation.
2023

80 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

Eight decades forward, SVA International continues to lead with insight, creativity, and resilience, earning recognition as one of Africa’s most enduring architectural practices.

SVA and the GIBB Group

SVA International is part of the GIBB Group of Companies, one of Africa’s leading multidisciplinary engineering and infrastructure organisations. This relationship strengthens our ability to deliver complex, large-scale projects through direct access to engineering, project management, and advisory expertise.

Through GIBB, we assemble fully integrated teams tailored to each project, enhancing coordination, reducing risk, and ensuring delivery certainty. This positions SVA as a trusted lead consultant, equipped to manage complexity and deliver cohesive, high-quality built environment solutions across Africa.

Studios & Shared Experience

SVA International operates through regional studios in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha. Each studio is rooted in its local context, bringing insight into regional markets, communities and development environments.

They are connected through a shared standard of delivery and a unified way of working. Knowledge flows across studios, supported by digital collaboration, common governance frameworks and national leadership oversight. Expertise is not confined to one office — it is accessible across the practice.

This structure allows SVA to remain agile and locally responsive while drawing on the depth and technical capability of a national firm, delivering work that is both contextually informed and rigorously coordinated

Our Approach to Sustainability

At SVA, sustainability is integral to the way we design and deliver. Every project is approached with intention, balancing immediate needs with long-term responsibility. Our architecture integrates green building principles, climate-conscious design, and resource efficiency to create spaces that endure.

But sustainability for us is more than environmental performance. It means designing resilient places that support people, strengthen communities, and generate lasting value for generations to come.

BIM Integration

For us, BIM isn’t just a modelling tool — it’s a discipline. It brings structure to complexity, clarity to coordination, and certainty to decision-making. In projects where risk is real and consequences are significant, disciplined information management is not optional — it’s essential.

Risk & Quality

We design with structure and foresight.

At SVA International, governance is embedded in how we deliver projects. We combine disciplined processes with informed decision-making to ensure that ambition is supported by clarity and control from the outset.

Our integrated approach aligns design, coordination and oversight across all project stages. Through early identification of risks, structured reviews and continuous monitoring, we protect programme, cost and quality performance while maintaining transparency and accountability.

This balanced approach enables reliable delivery on complex developments and reinforces our role as a trusted, long-term partner to our clients.
